"He ao te Rangi ka ūhia, mā te huruhuru te manu ka rere ai" - Whakatauki
As clouds adorn the sky, so do feathers enable the bird to fly - Māori Proverb
This stunning feather kete is constructed out of feathers, wool and cotton and is fully lined (see photos). Made by applying traditional methods to modern materials, this kete is a rare example of an exquisite and paintstaking traditional Māori artform.
This kete is multifunctional and can be used for special occasions. When not in use it can be hung as a spectacular piece of art on its own or housed in a glass frame.
Each grouping of three or four feathers is bound and attached to the kete by hand in tiers, creating the distinctive overlapping design common to these types of kete and korowai (feather cloaks). This labour intensive method is repeated to form the kete and attached to the decorative plaited edging at the top and on the handles.
My mother is the artist and she learnt her craft from a local kuia reknowned for her skill at creating these beautiful pieces. I am currently learning from her and hope to create more of these beautiful pieces in the future. As each piece takes a considerable amount of time to create, this will be the only one offered for sale at this time. However we are able to take orders for these and korowai on request.
These types of kete are difficult to find for sale, try google and see for yourself. The traditional examples sell at auction for many thousands of dollars and high end art dealers sell contemporary examples for between $900 - $1200. Selling direct enables us to keep costs much lower for our customers.
An unforgettable gift for that special occasion, 21st, or for your wall, this kete will become a treasured heirloom in your family.
